So Premarital.

Over the past year, there has been a grumble in the belly of Burlington.

“Feed me, I am hungry.”

And the system has responded. A shift is observed, and the vibe has evolved. And you ask, what does this sound like?

It sounds like the Premarital Sextet. These guys bring class, for real. Tight instrumentation on top of word-bombing magic yields big things kid. The Sextet is musically well-read, which is reflected in some of their influences which include: D’Angelo, U.N., George Fox, Nas, Fat Boody, Reg. Booty, Frank Zappa, $$$, Big L., Soft Core, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, KRS1, Love, Free Booze, Wu Tang Clan, Randy Newman, Anthony Hamilton, Ghost Face, Tribe Called Quest Hyrogliphics, Sticky Green, and Will Kirk (just to name a few). Get yourself more informed about the Premarital Sextet at their myspace.

The Premarital Sextet will be playing (along with other upstanding acts) at the Phoebe Magazine Launch Party this Tuesday Evening at Halverson’s on Church Street, here in Burlington. The event marks yet another encouraging indicator of the creativity and collaborative energy that circles through the city. We encourage you to expand your perspective by visiting Phoebe Magazine at phoebmag.com.

Diamond & Princess

March 23rd, 2008

Ain’t nothing like them Georgia Girls.

End of March in Burlington, Vermont. Winter is in the veins. Ideas of peaches and other sun-loving fruit is an exotic fantasy.

The fields of sound yield many crops. But what stands out on this l’hiver scape, like Day-Glo fluorescent easter eggs, is the sound of two Georgia Peaches swinging in the breeze, enjoying the sunshine. A Princess and a Diamond.

Under the umbrella of Atlanta’s own Crime Mob, Princess and Diamond have been funneling a raw soulful energy into their craft. With Rhythms for hips, these girls are taking the laid-back balling vibe into intriguing territory.

Pitchfork to Launch Online Music TV Channel April 7th

March 12th, 2008

Pitchfork.tv

In the days of my youth I was able to watch music videos, live concerts, behind-the-scenes documentaries and more on one of two revolutionary new cable networks, MTV, whose name actually stood for “Music TeleVision” and VH1, whose name was always a mystery to me.

In recent years, these networks have shifted in response to their markets. Today, they feature reality shows almost exclusively. This move is clearly to target the mush-minded teenybopper generation a half a step younger than us.

Web 2.0, I hope to God, will be able to make good on the recent promise to fill this gap. Pitchfork, everyone’s favorite music review site, has announced the April 7th launch date for Pitchfork.tv.

From Pitchfork.com:

The 24-hour music network was such a great concept. What happened? Given music’s nearly inexhaustible supply of notable artists and genres, there are no limits to how deeply it can be explored. But despite all the footage we’ve seen of high-profile rock and pop artists hitting their creative strides, similar documents of independent artists are far less accessible, if they exist at all.

Ride the Magic Buffalo

March 8th, 2008

It looks as if Bjork is being cool and edgy again. She is releasing Wanderlust with remixes by artists Matthew Herbert and Ratatat, and she is including, at no additional cost (lying), a video that includes 3D glasses. Just when you thought riding a magic buffalo couldn’t get any cooler…

Ridin' Bjork

wahhooooo!

look at this!

Encyclopedia Pictura has made other cool videos in the past and has an amazing website, so make sure to check them out here.

On another note related the beautiful country of Iceland, Sigur Ros seems to have taken over YouTube today with the release of “heima,” their new documentary film which encompasses a series of free concerts performed back in 2006. It has performances from all of their albums plus two new songs that were filmed in a fucking herring oil tank, of all places. Sigur Ros

Distant Future(claw)

March 4th, 2008

Each year the University of Chicago hosts its 48 Hour Film Project. As per the event’s title, contestants are given 48 hours to produce and shoot a short film. All the film entries are then screened, judged, and a standout is selected for the top prize. Below you’ll find last year’s winning entry, “Distant Future”. Before you view it, though, we urge you to have a look at the film’s co-producer and director Alexander Graham overstate the piece’s meaning:

No single actor or man or circumstance can claim sole responsibility for this film. It was born out of the cooperation between the bleak Chicago winter, the sad inhabitants of Chicago’s south side, and a building, the structure of which suggested the basic outline of the plot to me long before it ever took concrete form. This film is an abstraction, a distillation of the metaphysical longing each University of Chicago student experiences during a barren and loveless winter. During these winters each man or woman is indeed the last inhabitant of a frozen tundra, with only the tools of the mind to occupy a vast and unfriendly void. Human warmth, a kind glance, a sunset shared exist only as memories as distant as the future that can never quite arrive, never quite rescue the present. The cold creeps into the present, too; first into the lower extremities, but soon the very fibers of being are robbed of their vitality and they become dense and opaque, susceptible to snapping. Still, though, there are pockets of life, last enclaves where heroes await the chance to plant their feet firmly in the ground and girded for battle take what may come. Salvation is never quite so distant as Satan would have us believe.

I hate the World and I hate you! -anonymous

stumbling upon interesting obscurities on the world wide web truly does brighten a person’s day. Being completely anonymous this crazy cool site (http://postsecret.blogspot.com) and also a book, gives you the venting that your stressful daily life calls for. While most postcards found in stores like Hallmark are cheery and relay a comforting message to celebrate good news, these postcards displayed are true feelings by true people, but you won’t ever know who they are, maybe its your friend, your sister, your roommate?.. who knows. Some post cards are dark, others are slightly more joyful, but not really.

In the Future

March 1st, 2008

In the future, we will have nanotechnology that we can wear on our wrist. It will be able to shapeshift, clean itself, and it will be translucent green.

In the past future, we will have giant roadbuilders and superspeed transcontinental motor roadways.

For now, all we have is our PCs. Treat them well! They are the path to the nanotech utopia in which our children can wear cell phone snap bracelets…
